How to host a murder mystery dinner: a guide for the organiser
The organiser does not have to do everything. Their job is to set the pace and let the case do the rest.
Hosting a murder mystery dinner at home is easier when you separate the host’s role from the players’ role. You do not have to act all evening or know every answer: prepare the materials, explain the rules, and help the group follow the case phases.
Before the evening
- Choose a format that fits the number of guests.
- Print and sort the documents before guests arrive.
- Clear a surface for reading and comparing clues.
- Decide whether to serve dinner before, during a break, or after the investigation.
How to guide the group
Explain at the start that nobody needs to solve the case immediately. Read the documents first, build a timeline, and only then compare alibis. If the discussion stalls, repeat a question from the case file instead of giving away the answer.
What to avoid
Do not hand out too many materials at once, and do not correct every theory as it appears. Doubt is part of the game. Also avoid turning dinner into a race: the goal is a shared explanation, not being the first to speak.
A format without a host
