What is a printable murder mystery case file? (Not a party kit, not an escape room)
Three different formats, three different expectations. Here’s how to choose without spoiling your night.
Search “mystery game” or “murder mystery” and you’ll find everything: party kits with roles, escape rooms, apps, subscription boxes. A printable mystery (a case file) is a specific slice of that world: a PDF that feels like a dossier. You print at home and solve with paper and pencil.
Printable case file: what it is in practice
You get documents: a brief, statements, maps, notes, archive scraps. You read, compare, rebuild timelines and lies. Usually 1–6 players, 60–90 minutes, no actors. Hints and the solution can live on the site, so they don’t sit under your eyes while you print.
How a session usually goes
You open the brief, spread the pages, note times and names. Then you loop back: a statement that doesn’t fit, a map that breaks an alibi. There’s no forced turn order; you set the pace. At the end you can check your theory against the solution on the site, if you want to close the loop.
It isn’t a murder mystery party
In party kits everyone plays a character, often in costume, with a host keeping time. Fun for a big group. Different from a dossier: you don’t act, you investigate. If you hate costumes and want two people at a table, the case file is the right road.
It isn’t an escape room
An escape room is a physical (or digital) space with locks, timers, things to touch. A printable mystery is reading and reasoning. No set dressing. No mandatory countdown. You can pause, re-read a statement, go back to the map.

How to spot it when you buy
